Dr Katherine L Heilpern is the Senior Vice President and Chief Operating Officer at NewYork-Presbyterian/Weill Cornell Medical Center, a 862-bed academic medical center in New York City.  In this role, she manages and directs daily operations including cost, quality and delivery of service for the medical center and is also responsible for the development and fiscal management of service lines and other strategic initiatives.

Previous to this role, Dr Heilpern had more than 25 years of experience in emergency medicine and academic health care and held several leadership roles at the Emory School of Medicine, where she earned her medical degree.  In 2007, she was appointed the Chair of Emergency Medicine, overseeing five metro Atlanta emergency departments with more than 350,000 patients per year.  Dr Heilpern’s scholarship focuses on the interface between emergency medicine and infectious diseases.  Prior to joining Emory, she served as a medical officer with the Indian Health Service at Fort Defiance on the Navajo reservation.

Dr Heilpern has served as president of the Society for Academic Emergency Medicine (SAEM), and has received many awards including the SAEM Award for the Advancement of Women in Academic Emergency Medicine.  She has been described as having remarkable success leading teams dedicated to excellence in clinical care, research, and education, and expanding access to high-quality care.
